Movies = Movement?
Is The Zeitgeist Movement based on these films? The short answer is No. The movement is based on the work of Jacque Fresco of The Venus Project. When Joseph's original film was made it was not in an attempt to create a movement, in fact it was not until later that he even knew of TVP. Due the the immense popularity of Zeitgeist: The Movie, 'Addendum' was created to promote TVP and was the kickstart of TZM. Even still, while Addendum and many aspects of the original film are very relevant to the awareness and tenets of TZM, these films are not the basis of the movement itself, and watching them alone is insufficient to truly understand the movement.
While the word "Zeitgeist" is also associated with Peter Joseph's films, "Zeitgeist: The Movie" and "Zeitgeist: Addendum", the film series based content isn't to be confused with the tenets of "The Zeitgeist Movement" here. Rather, the films were inspirations for "The Zeitgeist Movement" due to their popularity and overall message of seeking truth, peace and sustainability in society.
The term “Zeitgeist” is defined as the ‘The General intellectual, moral and cultural climate of an era.” The Term “movement” very simply implies ‘motion” and change, Therefore The Zeitgeist Movement is thus an organization which urges change in the dominant intellectual, moral and cultural climate of the time.
The Movement is not about Comparative Religion, False Flag Terrorism, Economic Hitmen, Fractional Reserve Banking or the Federal Reserve. The films are unrelated to the Movement in detail and are personal expressions of Peter Joseph. There is often some confusion in this regard and in the most extreme cases some people have the knee-jerk reaction that TZM support's "Conspiracy Theories" or the like. This type or rhetoric tends to be of a pejorative/insulting nature, used in the context of dismissal of The Movement by an erroneous and "taboo" association.

Zeitgeist: The Movie (2007 [2010 revision])
The history of "Zeitgeist: The Movie" is not what many assume. The original Zeitgeist was not a film, but a performance piece, which consisted of a vaudevillian style multi-media event using recorded music, live instruments and video. The event was given over a 6-night period in New York City and then, without any interest to professionally release or produce the work, was "tossed" up on the Internet arbitrarily. The work was never designed as a film or even a documentary in a traditional sense - it was designed as a creative, provoking, emotionally driven expression, full of artistic extremity and heavily stylized gestures.
However, once online, an unexpected flood of interest began to generate. Within 6 months over 50 Million views were recorded on Google Video counters (before they were reset for some reason). The current combined estimates put the number of Internet views at over 100 million as of 2009. Suddenly "Zeitgeist" the event, became "Zeitgeist: The Movie".
Zeitgeist: Addendum (2008)
After Zeitgeist's tremendous success, the decision was made to make a follow up in 2008 entitled "Zeitgeist: Addendum". Originally this was going to conclude the series, introducing ideas of resolve for some of our ongoing social problems. Yet, this work succeeded in sparking a mass shift of attention, inspiring the development of an activist organization now called The Zeitgeist Movement. This Movement, founded by Peter Joseph in conjunction with Jacque Fresco's "Venus Project", now works globally to spread information about a new social system called a Resource Based Economy. With over 420,000 registrations from nearly all countries as of mid 2010, the development has been dynamic.
However, this is an aside- The Zeitgeist Film Series, while an inspiration for The Movement which shares the term "Zeitgeist", is not to be confused with the content/views of the films in detail. The Zeitgeist Movement is an economic/sustainability movement at its core and its relationship to the Film Series content is not consistent. The Films, while now moving to promote The Movement more so in part, are still intellectual/artistic treatments and are not to be considered a basis for The Movement itself.
Zeitgeist: Moving Forward (2011)
Now, a new production - the third film of the series - entitled "Zeitgeist: Moving Forward". This work focuses on the state of modern scientific understandings with regard to human behavior, along with advanced technological and organizational methods which could improve our society greatly, reducing the possibility of severe ecological problems for the future and hence working towards true global sustainability for the species itself.
Zeitgeist: Beyond The Pale (2012)
Zeitgeist: Beyond the Pale, the 4th installment of the ‘Zeitgeist Film Series’, [anticipated release in late 2012 / early 2013] will continue its exploration of culture – this time from the perspective of what comprises the values dominant in society today and what defines their merit with respect to social sustainability.
